The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to restore the earlier eligibility criteria for the number of attempts in JEE Advanced. This means that candidates will now have only two attempts to clear JEE Advanced, just like the rules were in place before this year's announcement.

In a recent development, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) has once again revised the number of attempts allowed for the JEE Advanced examination. Earlier, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur had issued a notification increasing the number of attempts from two to three. However, following a meeting, the decision has now been reversed.

In a press release issued by IIT Kanpur on Monday18 November 2024, it was confirmed that the number of attempts for JEE Advanced has been reduced back to two, reversing the earlier change. This means that students who have passed their 12th grade in 2023 will no longer be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced, despite the earlier provision that had allowed them this opportunity.

This sudden change has left many students disappointed, especially those who were hopeful after the initial announcement.  After the increase in attempts, thousands of students had applied for JEE Main with the aim of taking advantage of the new opportunity. Many students had even started preparing for IIT admissions once again, believing they had an additional chance.

The likely reason behind this decision to revert to two attempts could be the potential for students to demand permanent changes to the rules if three attempts were allowed. The fear was that such a precedent could lead to future demands to make this policy permanent, which prompted the revision. This move has understandably caused frustration among students who were eagerly preparing for their next opportunity.
